CHATEL UPDATE

14 February 2002

Well for saying we're having the worst season for 40 years (c'mon it was in the Daily Mail, it must be true), life in Chatel is still looking pretty damn good.

OK so it's the French holidays, English half term is looming and yes, the slopes are pretty packed, but there are 420 miles to ski here, dammit. There's still plenty of snow and you can always get away from the maddening crowds if you really want. We could do with a little more of the white stuff, if you're listening Oh Mighty Snow God, but all things considered we're not doing bad at all.

Check the picture below, taken on the afternoon of Wednesday 13th Feb and decide for yourself…

Just about every run is open; some admittedly are looking decidedly brown and patchy, but that's only at the very bottom - most are holding out admirably and there is much fun to be had by all.

Driving to the slopes this morning, it was that hot that we did have the distinct feeling that we
should really have been going to the beach rather than the mountain, but is that such a bad thing for February? The worst lift queue was 10 minutes max; not bad at all considering it's the French hols.

The coming half-term week is obviously going to be manic in terms of crowds - just bear in mind what Michael Douglas famously said about lunch being for billies and you'll be fine!
