ZERMATT UPDATE

05 February 2002

Firstly, please accept my apologies for the delay in reports from the wonderful resort of Zermatt. I have been struck down with the flu that seems to be sweeping through the resort worker community. My mother would probably tell me that I'm burning the candle at both ends.

To the snow report...Still no real snow to speak of and things are getting a little desperate. The water supply for the snow cannons is rumoured to have run dry. Other rumours circulating resort include the possibility that the Rothorn area may be shut down! On a positive note, it is predicted to snow on Weds 6 and poss over the weekend. I'll let you know.

The past couple of weeks have seen some mega sessions in the evening. The highlight was most definately an early celebration of Australia Day. With most of us having our day off on Wednesday it was decided that Tuesday was the one. Festivities were commenced with a bbq on the hillside of Blauherd with Henry and Tom tending to the cooking. We were treated to the
aerial antics of paraglider Ronnie, dropping a koala and can of VB from the sky.

Festivities moved into the evening with the traditional boat race event held at the North Wall Bar (with a little help from ozzie bar, the Pipe, staff). Hot favourites this year were the ozzie team who fielded a very strong squad.

The event kicked off with each captain (including me) being fed some filthy oz rum from a syringe. Nice. Then the racing began.

Officially the worst team of the event were Total Eclipse who managed to be beaten before their first athlete had finished her pint. Shocking. I'm glad to say that my team (the Bubba Leroy Quartet) made it through to the semi's in glorious fashion. Well done to team mates Frangie, Jonas and the Rat-boy.

The final came down to the Ozzie team and Wards squad. Anyone who has seen Ward drink will already know the outcome of this. The man is amazing, managing to knock back his pint in under 3 seconds. Adding insult to injury, Ward also elected to eat a bread roll before begining his final run. Well done, mate.

Celebrations then moved on into town. Obviously the Pipe was first call of port and then on to the broken where Rat managed the Monkey Bar challenge. So impressed was one young lady that there is now a Mrs Rat.

Finally, a tearfull farewell this week as Scottish couple Ronan and Joyce departed Zermatt. With the poor snow here and a bundle of cash in their bank accounts the jammy buggers have decided to go on holiday for a month in Colorado. Good luck to you both.
