KEYSTONE UPDATE

2 February 2002

ParadeSon of Sif and stepson of Thor (God of Thunder), Ullr, the snow God, is enjoying the bitter cold of Breckenridge.

The festival, to repay Ullr for his gift of snow, was started back in 1963. The first few years of the event were hailed with locals honoring Ullr with parties, gold coins, skiing, parties and parties.

Over the years Breckenridge has formed a host of traditions to help celebrate the event: Ullr Ball, the Ullr Bonfire, the Ullr parade, snow sculpting (now known as the International Snow Sculpture Championships), Ullr King and Queen and the Ullympics.

UllrThis year the party kicked off on Thursday, January 31st with a parade on Breckenridge's Main Street. "Ullr Then and Now" was the theme and enclosed are some pictures of the crazy event.

Unfortunately our camera froze as the temperature dropped to zero Fahrenheit and we were unable to get shots of the two, very blue, very naked streakers who ran by, or the float that had a hot-tub full of fine young ladies representing Arapahoe Basin Ski Area.

Keep your eyes peeled for news and pictures of the International Snow Sculpture Championships, featuring three British teams!
