From February 20th to 22nd 2003 the Red
Bull Snowthrill of Chamonix will again set the scene at the
foot of the giant Mont Blanc in the French Alps. Some 50 world class
freeskiers from all over the world will race against each other
and the 'big' mountain to battle for the eighth Snowthrill trophy.
The
race against the mountain
Compared to the previous years the competition modus has been slightly
changed. Out of the 35 participating men, 20 are exclusively invited
to participate, the remaining 15 spots will be nominated to outstanding
athletes. From the 10 women, five are invited and five will be nominated.
Each competitor has two runs on the first competition days. Nine
men and three women will then advance to the finals.
The call of the wild
The athletes will ski down the legendary "Pente d'Hôtel" on the
Brevent, a precipitous slope studded with rocks and criss-crossed
by numerous couloirs. To run the slope with an average gradient
of 45°, demands peak physical control, concentration, and absolute
fitness from the participants. A jury of five experts will judge
each run according to five essential elements: line selection, control,
rhythm, technique and aggressiveness. The competitors are free to
demonstrate their own style (jumps, turns, steep lines over the
rocks or a mixture of all). All in all conditions under which freeskiers
experience the total adrenalin rush, but an average skiier would
never dare to participate.
Crème
de la crème of Freeskiing
Among the invited athletes for the Red Bull Snowthrill of Chamonix
are freeskiing legend Chris Davenport of the US, Guerlain Chicherit,
winner of 2000, as well as last years heroes Andrea Binning of Australia
and Frenchman Bruno Compagnet. A detailed starter list will be available
at the beginning of February.
