Carrick-Anderson climbs 20 places
Emma Carrick-Anderson (27, Edinburgh) silenced critics today with
a return to World Cup form and a 22nd place at the opening FIS World
Cup slalom of this season in Park City, Utah.
From
a start position of 42nd on the first run, Emma, who has changed
skis to Fischer over the summer, battled her way down the first
run to finish tied in 28th place with former World Champion, Claudia
Riegler of New Zealand, and making the all important top 30 cut
to qualify for the second run.
Start of season pressure
The seasonšs opening is an important time for ski racers, as they
jostle for position after the summer lay off, with Emma beating
many higher ranked skiers, among them former training partner Henna
Raita of Finland, with a ranking of 14th.
After the race, Emmašs coach Andreas Schernthaner
said, "She showed last week at the Nor-am, although she did
not finish, that she can compete with the best. She went really
well on the top today and needs to let go more on the flatter sections.
This result was important to her as a marker for the season ahead."
The race was won by multiple Olympic medal
winner Janica Kostelic. Tomorrow, the men, including Alain Baxter
and Johnny Moulder-Brown Race in a revised course in Park City.
