THE ICE HOTEL

18 November 2002

Ever wondered how the Ice Hotel began?

Art Centres and Skiing
The Ice Hotel13 years ago, 200km inside the Artic circle in northern Sweden in a village called Jukkasjarvi (try pronouncing that after a few!) the villagers decided that they didn't need to build a ski resort, to attract tourists. What they needed was an Art Centre.
The long soulless dark winters must have warped the villagers minds, because who on earth would want to visit an art gallery in the middle of nowhere, when it's minus 40 outside?!

A year later, and a cylindrical shaped igloo was built on the frozen River Torne, housing collection of ice sculptures. Visitors who came were amazed by the Ice Gallery, which would of undoubtedly put the Tate Modern to shame. Infact they were so impressed, they seemed to of missed the last snow cat home, as several of them spent the night in the igloo. The next morning they raved about the experience (obviously they enjoy hypothermia more than most people), and the Ice Hotel concept was born.

A new hotel every year
Now, every winter the Ice Hotel is constructed, and in the 2001 /2002 winter season it had grown to 5,000 square meters in size. Inside visitors could visit the Iceart Gallery, catch a film in the Icecinema, worship in the Icechurch, get wasted in the Absolut Icebar drinking from ice shot glasses, and crash out on Reindeer skin.

This year, the Ice hotel operations have been extended. There is a second Icehotel near Québec, and a Iceglobe theatre (a replica of Shakespeare's Globe) is planned too. At the end of the winter, the sun warms the ice, and the Icehotel melts, and the ice that came from the river, returns to the river.

The Icehotel opens in 13 December
