SNOW PROMPTS LONG SKI PASS LINES

5 November 2002

Sunday was last day to buy cut-rate deals for several ski areas. Whether it was because of the nearly 2 feet of snow that blanketed Boulder since last week or simply procrastination, hundreds waited in lines up to two hours long Sunday to buy ski passes.

Last chance for a great price
It was the last day to purchase cut-rate season deals for many ski areas, including discounted passes for Loveland Ski Area and Winter Park Resort and two multi-mountain Vail Resorts passes.

"I haven't had a chance until now - and the snow does get you in the mood to go out and get your pass," said Sandra Brummett, 19, of Boulder as she waited behind dozens at Boulder Ski Deals and contemplated whether to buy Vail's three-mountain $269 Buddy Pass or the five-mountain $319 Colorado Pass.

The deals went on sale last spring and then again in August. "When the snow started falling, the phones started ringing," said Loveland spokesman Kevin Wright.. "And as the snow subsided today, the call volume did a little. It hasn't been as crazy as (Saturday)."

Up to 2 feet of snow last week
Although only three Colorado resorts are open — Loveland, Copper Mountain and Wolf Creek — many reported more than 2 feet of new snow last week. Boulder received 22.3 inches in a single storm that hit in "two big pieces" last week, said meteorologist Matt Kelsch.

The last time a storm produced more than 20 inches in Boulder was in March 1998 - but that snowfall came in a single day.
