SNOW IN THE ALPS

18 October 2002

If you think it's cold in the UK just now, you'll be pleased to know that the Alps are sub-zero and this morning natives woke up to a healthly snowfall.

Meanwhile over in the States Loveland Ski Area became the first ski resort to open yesterday. The ski area fired up one lift at 9 am with eager skiers waiting in line to become the first to enjoy the snow.

Several carloads of skiers and snowboarders had camped out overnight to get the first chance at the nearly mile-long run of 1,000 vertical feet covering 48 skiable acres.
Loveland opened with a 15-inch snow depth in 26 degree weather. Forecasts called for 10 to 20 mph winds and high temperatures of 45 to 55 on the first day of skiing.
