AUSTRALIAN AUGUST IN THREDBO

02 September 2002

It's been an eventful month here in Thredbo.

Red Bull Rails
First of all there was the Red Bull Rails competition. The supermarket carpark in Jindabyne was taken over by the 'Rail' community throwing themselves down a huge scary rail banked by snow brought in by lorries on top of the concrete. Quite a few casualties after that one!!

Nokia Top to Bottom
Next was the Nokia Top to Bottom race. A no holds barred race with catagories for both skiers & boarders, pro's and am's, starting at the top of Karells (the highest lifted point in Oz) to the bottom of the supertrail - about 5kms in total and usually involving much carnage. This year was no exception. The conditions were not good, basically top to bottom ice and a few competitors withdrew because of this - my housemate included.

Sprite Sessions
Following this was the Sprite Sessions. Not only do the sponsor the comps on old Sheffield, they do here too!! The Big Air, Bordercross and Half Pipe all went underway over the course of a week. The Big Air itself was over 55ft and it looked like a new mountain had emerged at the top of the Merrits area!!

Boardercross
The Bordercross had originally started off with 3 vicious rollers before going into the first burn, but this got changed PDQ after 2 riders got badly injured in the practise sessions. The start was moved to the top of the first roller to keep speeds down but unfortunately this then turned it into more of a GS course. Added to this, some riders were racing in hard boots on alpine boards, meant that some other riders were not too happy at the end of the comp.

Blue skies but no snow
It was race weekend again last weekend for all the rich kids and the place is still packed out again this week but the snow is disappearing. Since the last report, we have only had another 10cms. The temperature has stayed low at night which has helped but the days are warm with blue skies, which is nice but it means no new snow. However, the barometer has been dropping and the winds are picking up again which could mean a change in the weather butits more likely that spring is here and the season with be closing soon.
