| COURCHEVEL ENQUIRER TO CLOSE? |

Alex Irwin, the publisher, recently
announced the bombshell on the Enquirer
website. Alex told Natives that the decision "is not yet
final", but it looked likely that financial pressures would
prevent his return to Courchevel this winter. The effect could be as devastating for Courchevel season workers as when the Equipe closed, an event that took a full season to recover from. Although the Enquirer was regularly
criticised for printing salacious half-truths and occasional downright
lies, its effect in resort was similar to that of 'Heat' or 'OK',
in that it was impossible to see a copy without picking it up and
flicking through it. The first issue of the Enquirer in
January 1999, promised that it would "Do to respectable journalism
what an iceberg did for the Titanic!". In the four years since,
the Enquirer has a been a fulcrum, a rock and a endless source of
gossip, quizzes, event info and humour for workers in resort. Courchevel
would be the worse without it.
