20 August 2002

The young athletes of Gloucester Ski Club, sponsored by Natives, recently opted for extra lessons with an intensive week of ski school training at the Gloucester Ski and Snowboard Centre.

The 23 local youngsters participated in a ski camp organised by the club's coach Hedley Beavis, and aimed at developing their technique.

Under the leadership of New Zealand team racer and Welsh squad coach, Thomas Jones, the focus was on body position, carving and the use of pressure to maximise forward motion. Moving into race mode, the emphasis was on skiing gates, race lines and enhancing overall performance.

Course leader Thomas Jones said, "They are a fine group of youngsters with great potential. Our focus for the week is to develop technique, build confidence and have success and fun in skiing'

Also involved with the school were Dave Durgan - English team racer and Alpine coach, Nigel Street - Alpine ski leader and ASSI instructor, and Hannah Goddard - sports psychology scholar athlete from Georgia Southern University.

Iain Martin from Natives said, "We were delighted to be asked to design the Summer Camp hoodys and to sponsor the Team. The Summer Camp is a great idea and we wish all the skiers best for the future."

Gloucester Ski Club caters for the developing skier with training twice weekly at the Matson Ski and Snowboard Centre.
