HUGE PLANS FOR BRECKENRIDGE RESORT

5 August 2002

Breckenridge Ski Resort and the Town of Breckenridge are working together on a development plan for Peaks 7 and 8. This historic agreement, which has involved months of discussion and debate, represents a shared vision by both the ski resort and the town development that addresses current and future needs of the local community in an environmentally sensitive manner.

The deal hopes to preserve the historic character of Breckenridge while allowing the resort to remain competitive in the industry. It is hoped that the local business community can grown and develop while minimizing environmental impact.

Plans include a high-speed, six-passenger lift to serve new terrain on Peak 7 and the replacement and lengthening of Lift 4 with a four-passenger lift, subject to U.S. Forest Service approval, to be ready for use during the 2002-2003 ski season. The Peak 7 Lift will provide access to 165 additional acres of much-needed intermediate terrain, including lift access to the famous Peak 7 glades. More than two-thirds of Breckenridge skiers and snowboarders consider themselves at an intermediate ability level, yet only 35 percent of the mountain’s terrain has been classified as intermediate up until now.

In a major initiative to alleviate vehicular congestion in town, the Resort and the Town will form a partnership for the construction of a $16 million gondola designed to run from the Watson and Sawmill parking lots to the planned development at the base of Peak 7 and then will turn and head across to the Peak 8 base area. Plans also include a new half-mile skyway and new childcare facilities.
