MAJORITY STILL SKI

8 July 2002

A new survey from the Leisure Trends Group of Boulder, Colorado has shown that although Snowboarding is still the world's fastest growing sport, the majority of active wintersports lovers in the US still ski.

In 1994, only 13% of kids (16 and under) on the mountain snowboarded and only 4% of adults. The survey shows that by 2001-02, this had increased to 40% for both kids and adults.

However, only 25% of kids snowboard only and the majority (60%) only ski. For adults the figures show 89% ski, although this is down from 98% in 1993).

The report concludes that more work needs to be done to entice the youth market. This season marked one of the lowest percentages of teens age 16 to 18 participating in skiing, accounted for only 6.1% of the adult skiing and snowboarding population in 2001-2202. The 10-year average is between 8% and 9%.
