BAXTER APPEAL DATE SET

3 July 2002

Following Alain Baxter's positive drug test at the Winter Olympics and subsequent ban, a date has now been set for his appeal date.

Baxter will have his appeal against a three-month ban for doping heard by The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on September 5 and 6, the CAS has announced.

The hearing, which will take place in London, will not be open to the public.

BaxterBaxter was given a three-month ban by the International Ski Federation (FIS) last month for failing a doping test at the Winter Olympics, where he was initially placed in bronze medal position

The FIS found, however, that the banned substance methamphetamine found in Baxter's sample at the Salt Lake Games in February had been taken unintentionally.

Baxter, who was stripped of the bronze medal -- Britain's first ever Olympic alpine skiing medal -- he won in the slalom, said the substance came from a decongestant he used at the Games.

The 28-year-old will be banned from competition until December 15, meaning he will miss the opening World Cup event of the season.

But should Baxter win his September appeal, the FIS ban will then be reviewed, the British Ski and Snowboard Federation has said.
