PARALYMPICS UPDATE

2 April 2002

Congratulations to Stephen Napier who finished all of the races at the Winter Paralympics despite the severity of the 'Wildflower' Olympic course at Snowbasin.

His finish positions of three seventh places and one, sixth place are something to be proud of and a good basis to continue training for Turin in 2006.

Russell Docker, although failing to complete the four disciplines is still viewed as our best Sitskier in his class and we wish him well also for the next four years leading up to Turin.

Thirty countries competed in the male Alpine events with 144 athletes competing for the 102 medals awarded. There were fifteen different classes represented but some had to be combined as there were insufficient numbers for them to compete in their own class.

159 medals were awarded in total for all Alpine events. The first three countries ranked according to their medal haul were USA, Austria and Germany, with Canada coming a close fourth.

Total entries by discipline (Men and Women) were, Downhill 145, Super-G 165, Giant Slalom 181 and Slalom 177.

The height of the Wildflower course is 2585m at the Downhill start and 1948m at the finish. The steepest part of the course is a 61.63% gradient and the shallowest is a mere 5.5% for a very short distance after the initial start gradient of 58.68%. The Downhill course length was 2133m.
