BAXTER BANNED FROM BACKING BONNIE SCOTLAND

20 February 2002

In a surprising development from Utah, Alain Baxter, has been told that his hair 'could have been construed as making a political statement'.

Baxter, who is competing in the Men's Slalom this Saturday, had died his hair blue with a white cross to resemble the Scottish flag. Unfortunately according to the British Olympic Association (BOA) because he is representing Great Britain, while a Union Jack (and presumably a Nike swoop) would be okay, the cross of St Andrew is not.

Baxter claimed in an interview that it was only a 'bit of a laugh', but BOA officials evidently failed to see the joke.

21 of the 50-strong British team are Scottish.
