GREAT RESULT FOR ALCOTT IN THE COMBINED

15 February 2002

Chemmy AloottBritain¹s Chemmy Alcott (19, Hove) took a superb 14th place yesterday in the Women's Combined event.

Fresh snowfall on the downhill pistes of Snowbasin caused the running order for the's event to be altered, beginning with slalom and followed by a grand downhill finale.

Alcott began well completing her first slalom run in 12th, leaving her well placed for an early start on a relatively smooth piste on the 2nd run. Overall Chemmy was pleased with her slalom performance, particularly as she has experienced some difficulty in putting two clean slalom runs together over the past months.

'The change from soft to iced snow gave me a bit of a shock on the first run, but I managed to hold on, where a number of other girls came out. On the more technical 2nd course, I was late on the last gate before the flat section, but I was happy with my performance overall', Alcott said prior to the downhill element of the event.

Alcott started 4th on the downhill and while she knew she had made a mistake on the first jump she pushed hard, nailing the jump on the last wall and reaching the finish area to see her name in 3rd on the leaderboard.

As the leading competitors from the slalom completed their runs that placing dropped to 14th but overall Alcott was delighted with her performance: 'I'm thrilled to have placed in the top 15. This is a great result for me at the beginning of my Olympic career.'

Janica Kostelic, back from injury dominated the event and lead from the start, posting the fastest time in each of the three runs.
