NEW RESORT FOR LES ARCS

17 December 2001

Since details first emerged about Arc 1950, the new resort from Intrawest, owners of Whistler, interest has been massive in this development.

Arc 1950 will be the first new resort in France since Valmorel in 1976. New development in the Alps has been restricted for environmental reasons and this project has been followed closely.

A model of the new resortDetails released at a recent press conference suggest that the Canadian company have been very careful to ensure a Savoyard feel is retained throughout the development.

Arc 1950 will be a 'family friendly, car-free village' that will feel as if it has 'evolved over generations'. The 800 residential units will be more spacious than other French apartments.

How the mountain will lookEven allowing for the North American hyperbole ('the best sensory engineering has to offer'), it has to be said that this is going to be a great addition to the Tarentaise. 3500 extra beds in what will probably be the last opportunity to build a significant mountain resort in France. Building on the first stage will commence in Spring 2002 and will open for next winter 2002/3.

Intrawest investment in Compagnie des Alps

Intrawest owns 10 mountain resorts, including Whistler. Part of the Arc 1950 deal is an investment into Compagnie des Alps, the largest ski company in the world in terms of skier visits. CDA has interests in Tignes, Les Menuires, Flaine, Chamonix, La Plagne, Courmayeur and Verbier.

This is an extremely significant move, which could ultimately signify many changes for European workers. We'll be watching this relationship closely.
