BRITISH SUCCESS AT THE NZ BOARDING CHAMPS

10 September 2001

Huge crowds marked the NZ Snowboarding Championships in Cardona this weekend. The Kiwis celebrated local victories, but Britain's Jenny Jones stole their thunder winning the Women's Half Pipe.

Overall National Champions were Jah Harris of Wanaka in the Men’s and Suzy Parker, also from Wanaka became the Women’s Champion. Clayton Barker from Dunedin and Laura Woerlee from Queenstown take the Junior titles.

Action from the GSThe winners of Friday's GS came from further afield as Asami Hashimoto and Nobuko Okamoto, both of Japan, snapped up the men and women's titles from a field of over 70 riders. Qualification runs were against the clock but the finals whittled the field down in nail-biting duel elimination rounds in New Zealand’s first ever parallel giant slalom.

On Saturday, the crowds rolled up to watch Dylan Butt from Queenstown become the NZ Men’s Half Pipe Champion. “His best run was sick,” said Steven Webster, head judge. “On his first hit he went sky high with a mid twist – it was massive, bigger than the pipe!”

Suzy Parker from Wanaka became the NZ Women’s Half Pipe Champion after coming second behind Jenny Jones. Junior Champions are Michaela Sanders from Dunedin and Mitchell Brown from Mount Manganui.
