However, the clouds cleared in time for the Moguls to reveal the Val Thorens ski area in its true glory. Hundreds of holiday skiers crowded the sides of the steep black Cascades piste to watch skiers from the British, Scottish and English freestyle teams battle for the British title. Snow conditions were perfect on the course with fresh powder snow covering a firm base. The steep course was particularly testing for some of the younger skiers but the more experienced international competitors put down some impressive runs. In a closely fought contest ex-Radio 1 DJ Simon Bates beat Sam Temple, the reigning champion. Simon won the turns points and Sam produced better airs but Simon skied the fastest run of the day to inch ahead by a quarter of a point. In third place with 21.97 points was Martin Nankoo. Euan Stobie was top junior and 6th overall, adding to his recent win in the Scottish Championships. In the dual moguls Simon Bates again won, with Chris David second and Martin Nankoo third. The events were run jointly with the Danish Ski Federation who have been holding their national championships at this venue for 8 years. Final Placings 1. Simon Bates
PS Only joking...'smashing' DJ Simon Bates has not taken up moguls. In fact, he competes on the Pro Boarding circuit. | |
