BAXTER BACKS KIDS

9 April 2001

Britain's most consistently successful World Cup ski racer ever Alain Baxter will end his season in Europe this week among those young British skiers aspiring to emulate this winter's fantastic achievements among the top echelons of Slalom skiing.

While his younger brother Noel, 19, also from Aviemore, will be bidding to win all three British Junior titles over the three days of racing on the high altitude glacier slopes of Pitztal in Austria, starting yesterday, Alain will start as an open, non-junior competitor in The British Land Junior National Ski Championships' Slalom before flying back for a well deserved rest in his native Spey Valley.

Finishing the season ranked 11 in the World Cup slalom standings, Alain's participation will not only be a massive morale boost to the up and coming racers but will be a practical bonus for the younger British racers who, by being racing against one of the World's top slalom skiers in a sanctioned FIS international race can benefit their own ranking significantly as they bid to scale the ranking ladders of world slalom skiing.

'I am only too pleased to be finishing the season this way. I remember how tough it was as a relatively unsupported Junior age skier and anything I can do to help others reach World Cup level I will. I think that my success will have been a bit of a boost to the younger British skiers this year. It has taken me 10 years to get where I have reached this season and it's a long, hard climb, so I'll be glad to relax here and give as much encouragement and practical advice as I can,' said Baxter.

Three weeks ago Noel took two podium finishes at open, senior aged The British Land National Ski Championships in Saalbach-Hinterglemm . The three titles sweep, Slalom, Giant Slalom and Super-G is not unknown at Junior level but requires supreme consistency across the three championship races.

This title hat-trick is also a very realistic target for Twickenham's Chemmy Alcott, 18, who finished fifth in the World Junior Championships in February. She is a clear top seed in all three disciplines.

All of the junior aged members of The British Land National Ski Team will compete at the championships, as will most of over-age senior members.

Racing starts on Sunday 8th April with the Junior Slalom and finishes with the Junior Super G on Tuesday.

Then it is the turn of the younger racers as The British Land Childrens Championships run for the next three days.
