CHAMJAM 2001 - REPORT

14 March 2001

The last kickers have been jumped and the last beats have been pumped as Chamonix says goodbye to the phattest and finest winter Freesports and Music festival in Europe.

The ChamJam Freesports Festival saw five days of extreme action with extreme variations in weather, starting and finishing with sunshine with a few blizzards thrown in along the way.

The X-Disciplines began on the Monday and in spite of 40cm of fresh snow on the Sunday night the course remained in good condition, challenging but exciting, with narrow turns and quality jumps. The final heats on the Tuesday took place under bright sunshine with cheering crowds lining the course. The Skier X was won by Richard Gay in the men's and Natalie Schmidt in the women's. The Boarder X was won by Thomas Ligonnet in the men's and Lene Nordermoen in the women's.

Wednesday was Half Pipe day. The mild weather may have made the pipe slightly sticky but this didn't deter the riders from pulling off sick twists and flips. Thomas Ligonnet again triumphed in the men's Boarder competition, with Jenny Jones in the women's. The best male skier in the pipe was Laurent Favre with Claire Martinod winning best female skier.

Sadly Thursday, which should have been the biggest day on the mountain with the Boss des Bosses and the Big Air Finals, saw phat flakes falling for most of the day with the visibility reduced to less than 5m mid way through the afternoon. The crowds steadfastly refused to move, but the Big Air had to be postponed as the riders could no longer see the take off.

The Boss des Bosses went ahead with teams from Zermatt, Verbier, Val d'Isere and naturally Chamonix. At the bottom of the course all you could see was mist until the final kicker where riders would suddenly fly out of nowhere and hit the finishing line. Zermatt retained their crown.

The Big Air (check the pics) was held on Friday, which turned out to be a bluebird day. The Skier Big Air was won by Nicky Adams, a 17 year old Canadian who had only been skiing for 1 month, while Stephanie Lieber won the women's and the English came out on top in the Boarder Big Air with Jamie Baker winning the mens' and Jenny Jones winning the womens'.

The one and only Ski Sunday ran a full montage feature of the event last Sunday which went out to 0.8 million British viewers. The ChamJam Music Festival went off all week. The main highlights were Ash playing a beautiful acoustic set at the Lognan restaurant at Les Grands Montets which went out live on Jo Whiley's show, hosted by Nemone, on Radio 1 to 1.8 million people.

Brighton's Pressure Drop slammed out tunes at the bottom of the mountain despite adverse weather conditions (including constant rain at the bottom of les Grands Montets, resulting in a swimming pool 50cms deep at the site of the Prize Giving), following up with a Sound System set in the Cybar, Rue du Moulins on Thursday 8th. Radio 1's One World Show broadcast one hour of Hybrid's DJ set followed by Leftfield's Paul Daley with Nick Rapccioli and MC Cheshire Cat at the same venue.

MTV Snowball threw an excellent party at the Cybar, despite Jaques Lu Cont (Les Rythmes Digitales) and his records being separated at Geneva airport, leaving Smokin' Jo and Rob Mac/Rob Smooth (Scratch/Speeka) to get the crowd grooving to a set full of funky tunes. All of which made up for the tricky weather!
