BAXTER MISSES PODIUM BY 0.2 OF A SECOND

11 March 2001

Alain Baxter continued his stunning season by finishing 4th - his best ever finish - in yesterday's World Cup race in Åre, Sweden.

Baxter prepared for his second run having achieved his strongest halfway position ever third (52.50 secs), just 0.53 seconds behind the leader.

Temperatures rose rapidly as midday approached and the second run course became soft and rutted. With a podium place in his sights, Alain produced a nerveless and powerful second run

Denied the podium today, Baxter has provided the top five result he promised supporters he would achieve prior the end of the season. Delighted British Land Alpine Team coach Christian Schwaiger said, 'Alain skied fantastically today. He is learning all the time and now knows he is strong enough to cope with pressure and difficult conditions.'

Finishes in all nine World Cup slaloms leave Alain with a series slalom standing of 11th, with four top ten results, including yesterday¹s 4th. To get an idea of how significant this is, it is important to remember that Baxter started the season ranked 63 in the world!

Baxter will now complete in a Europa Cup race next week before joining his team mates in Saalbach-Hinterglemm for the rescheduled 2001 British Land National Ski Championships, from 19 25 March.
