Ertl holds nerve to win gold!

Germany's Martina Ertl yesterday scored yet another major upset by winning the Women's Combined Event.

This event requires the winner to record the fastest time over one downhill and two slalom runs.

After the downhill Austria's Renate Goetschl (lying 2nd) and Croatia's Jana Kostelic (13th and winner of her previous seven slaloms) were the clear favourites.

However, Kostelic suprisingly skied out on the first slalom run, and when Ertl put a storming second run in, the pressure proved too much for Goetschl and American Caroline Lalive (lying in 2nd) who both missed gates and saw their medal chances disappear.

Silver was won by Christine Sponring (Austria) and the Bronze by Karen Putzer (Italy).
