After the success of the Snowdomes at Milton Keynes
and Tamworth, it looks possible that the next slope
could be following fast in Chatham in Kent.
The slope would be located in one of Medway's most
historic naval buildings - The World Naval Base, where
submarines were built for more than a century. It
is proposed to turn one of the slip bays into an indoor
snow slope.
The 325ft long slip has been described as "a cathedral
to ship building". The first submarine was launched
from the slip in 1853 and was where HMS Ocelot, which
is on display at the dockyard, was built. However
if the structure, which has just undergone a £3 million
three year restoration, is transformed into a ski
centre it could attract up to 100,000 visitors a year.
If planning consent is given the attraction would
create 85 jobs. The centre, to be named the Medway
Snow Bowl, would be the first of its kind in the country
with real snow on the ground although the air temperature
would be the same as outside. The plan has been put
forward by Medway company Snowtime UK.
Snowtime claim that because the slope already exists
and snow can be produced in all normal UK temperatures,
the slope could be operational within a fortnight.
The second phase of the developent will include a
curling and skating rink, and ice climbing wall. .
