THE WORLD SKI CHAMPIONSHIPS @ ST ANTON - DAY 12

10 February 2001

Second Swiss Gold

Sonia Nef won Switzerland's second gold on Friday in the Women's Giant Slalom.

A day after compatriot Michael Von Gruenigen has won the Men's title, Nef held off Italian Karen Putzer and newly-crowned slalom World Champion Anja Paerson to finish first.

Fresh snow caused a delay of nearly an hour on the second run, but Nef kept her nerve while others felt the pressure. Overall World Cup champion Renate Goetschl and defending champion Alexandra Meissnitzer both failed to finish.

'Today is one of the best days of my life," said Nef, "The piste was very bumpy and visibility wasn't that good. But after a few gates, I felt better and wasn't as nervous as I had been at the start."

Nef has now won five of the last six giant slaloms and has already secured overall victory in this season's World Cup.
