BREAKING NEWS IN MERIBEL

11 January 2001

Two snippets of Meribel news that have come our way.

1. The road to Meribel has been closed due to a landslide just above Bride Les Bains. All traffic is currently being diverted via Le Praz/La Tania.

Apparently the landslide occured following heavy rainfall the previous weekend. Worryingly reminiscent of February 1994 for those with long memories. So much for the 'massive repair programme' that was supposed to happen after that. All that's needed now is the heavist snowfall of the season!

Work is underway at clearing the road, but it's still unclear as to whether it will be open by the weekend for transfers. The Tourist Office advises that it may open on Friday evening, or failing that Saturday night. At least it's not peak season...

2. Unconfirmed reports have come in that Ski Cocktail has finally closed its doors forever. Following last week's news that the troubled ski school had temporarily been shut down, Natives understands that owner Jean-Yves Lapeyrere has now filed for bankruptcy...so I guess they won't be paying us for their advertising back in December, then  :'-(

[2 Feb - we understand Ski Cocktail shops are now being told to close. Again reports suggest staff are in discussion over wage claims. Staff have also allegedly discovered that accommodation they thought had been paid for the season they now have to pay themselves.]
