Alain Baxter and Johnny Moulder-Brown both put in stunning
performances to record career best top 20 results yesterday,
while Women's snowboarder Lesley McKenna finished 7th in
Sunday's Half-Pipe in Whistler.
In the Men's World Cup Slalom in Sestriere,
Alain Baxter lay a stunning 10th after the first run, just
1.33 sec behind the half way leader, Sebastien Amiez of
France. Encouraged by news of his team mate's performance
Moulder-Brown, starting in his first ever World Cup race,
skied to 22nd position.
Moulder-Brown was first of the Brits
to make his 2nd run charge. With nothing to lose, the 22
year old completed his run in a time of 56.93 to assure
of his first World Cup points.
A mistake on the top section cost
Alain Baxter time, but his aggregate was enough to place
him 13th - a further step up from his 21st in Park City
and a new British best in a Men's technical discipline.
Moulder-Brown finished in 17th place.
Both men were thrilled with their
results and convinced that there is more to come. "I
belong competing at this level," said Baxter. "The
day I string two good runs together, I know I will beat
any of these guys".
Over in Whistler, Britain's No.2
female boarder, Melanie Leando, took 17th place. Both girls
need to maintain their current top 20 standings to secure
an Olympic quota for Team GB in Salt Lake City 2002.
