Hermann Maier won the giant slalom at Val d'Isère yesterday,
celebrated his 100th World Cup race in style by leading
an Austrian clean sweep for the second successive day.
On Saturday, Maier led Austria to
six of the top seven places as he comfortably won the first
of the season's 'Classics' on the La Daille OK course.
It was the first time in five attempts
that Maier had won the Val d'Isere 'Premier Neige' race,
although he had a giant slalom win on the same hill taken
away on a technicality in 1997 when disqualified for removing
his skis too soon after crossing the finish line.
The Austrian, who was 28 last week, tops
the general standings with 416 points. Norwegian Lasse Kjus
is second on 371 and Austrian Stephan Eberharter third on
329.
