DRUGS IN RESORT - A WORD OF WARNING

4 December 2000

This word of warning regarding drugs in resort was forwarded to Natives earlier today:

'Several years ago in Verbier a smart young man took a job in one of the local shops and decided to increase his income by selling drugs.

'All went well, he was making money and a number of staff were paying over their wages to him.

'However Switzerland is not like the UK. The Swiss police decided they had had enough and tapped his phone, you don't need permission there, just a local order. They bided their time, then one early morning in March they swooped, gathered up 40 people and took them off down the valley. Again Switzerland is not like the UK, they can keep you in prison without telling anyone were you are and for as long as they feel like and they don't have to take you to court.

'When the local police decided they had sorted it out entirely to their satisfaction they threw all of them out of the country. With their passports stamped either no return or no return for a certain number of years. Not a good idea to get this on your passport as it stops you travelling on.

'The pusher got find over 50000 Swiss Francs which put him and his parents into considerable debt.

'So be warned in Switzerland the Swiss have their own problem they definitely do not take kindly to foreigners adding to it.'

[Addendum: On 18 December, seven workers were deported from Val Thorens for drug offences]
