EARLY SEASON SUCCESS FOR BRITS

20 November 2000

Britain's leading slalom and giant slalom skier Alain Baxter, 25 (Aviemore) made a significant breakthrough yesterday when he finished in a career best 21st place in the first FIS Alpine World Cup Slalom in Park CIty.

The Force is strong in his family (!) as also this weekend his cousin Lesley McKenna, Britain's top woman snowboarder, scored an excellent 8th place in the Half-Pipe at the Snowboard World Cup in Tignes, followed by a good 17th place in the Giant Slalom.

Five times British champion Baxter skied into 17th place from a start number of 53 with an attacking first run on a very testing, icy course which claimed 20 racers from the 71 strong field.

This qualified him for a second run of a World Cup Slalom for the first time in his career. Baxter ensured his first ever World Cup points by and declared himself "Relieved but delighted"

The bonus is that Baxter's points now qualify Britain for a second men's place on the Tour. This means Johnny Moulder-Brown, 22 will be allocated his first ever World Cup starts this season.
