Show still to run for ten days
next year
Despite the success of this year's Show, pressure has been
growing for a cut to a five day show. However, the word
reaching Natives is that the big retailers vetoed any cut.
So it's another ten day slog for the operators in 2001,
but two weekends for workers to party with! Let's hope the
KK has enough beer this time.
The pub with no beer...
The Krazy Kangaruh, venue for multiple resort reunions on
Saturday, cracked under the pressure and ran out of beer
over an hour before the Show was due to close. 'My, my,
these resort workers can drink' commented one barman, before
escaping the baying crowd...
New Snowdome Closed
The new Milton Keynes snowdome Snozone closed from Thursday
to Monday 6th November less than two months after opening.
The closure was due to the recent storms where parts of
the roof lifted and police had to close some surrounding
areas due to the flying debris.
New British Freeride event
Details are emerging of a new event that is in line to become
the unofficial and possible official British Freeride Championships.
The event is pencilled in for late-March,
with Morzine as a possible venue, and will include a Big
Mountain run, Skier X, Blader X and new product ski test.
The event is likely to be recognised by the IFSA and would
allow around 150 competitors.
More bids for BUSC 2002
Joining the Universities bidding to organise the British
Universities Championships next winter is a joint bid from
Napier and Heriot Watt. They are now up against Nottingham,
Greenwich and Herts for the right to organise, if such a
thing is possible, the 2500 students who travel to the event.
Val Thorens looks the most likely destination at this stage.
Share and share alike?
It was a truly altruistic
move when all the Big Air riders agreed to share the cash
prizes evenly at the end of the week, but which rider spoiled
the mood by insisting on his share?
Worst kept secret
Iglu confirmed the ski industry's
worst kept secret on Friday when they announced that Peter
Dyer had joined the board as a non-executive director. The
announcement came within days of the end of Dyer's gardening
leave period from the Thomson Travel Group.
The move surprised some, but not regular
followers of Natives, who first got wind of the story in
May. Some industry followers
believe that a major independent operator remains on the
Iglu shopping list - now Dyer's involvement is official,
could this be the next announcement?
[Update: 30 October - Skiworld, Britain's
largest independent operator, contacted us to distance themselves
from this story. Ian Coleby, Chairman, told Natives: ' I
am totally unaware of any approach from Iglu or from Peter
Dyer or indeed from any party at all with regard to the
ownership of Skiworld Ltd.']
Another one bites the dust?
Not a week goes by without another ski website joining an
already over-crowded marketplace, but how many will still
be there in January? And which one may not make Christmas?
