BUSC (the British Universities Ski
Championships) has never been so in demand.
Despite sensationalist
coverage in the British press (see our previous report 'Students
drink and like to party shock!'), a number of European
resorts are keen to host the evnt themselves to welcome
the students back into town.
Resorts keen to host BUSC
2002
The 2001 event will be held in Saalbach
for the second consecutive year. 'The spirit of the students
infected everyone in a most positive way,' Wolfgang Breitfuss,
director of the Tourist Office said recently, 'We were very
happy to welcome them back.'
However, Jean-Marc Silva, director of Les
Arcs, has told Natives that his resort 'would be delighted
to welcome BUSC back' after the successful events there
prior to the move to Austria. 'With the link to La Plagne
and another 3500 beds due by 2002, Les Arcs will be able
to offer even more to students than in previous years.'
Universities bidding for BUSC 2002
Although BUSC 2001 is still six months away, planning is
well underway by those universities hoping to be selected
as the organising committee for 2002.
Already declared are the Universities
of Nottingham and Hertfordshire (HUSKIS), with Greenwich
also understood to be interested. The winning university
must convince their peers in a one-university, one-vote
ballot later this year.
While HUSKIS have already set up an
impressive website
and have experience of running their own race series, the
Nottingham team were putting in some early research last
weekend at the London Ski Show, where they visited the Natives
stand.

Nottingham team shown are (from left to right) Simon Reid,

2001, Nick Lonie.
