With most resorts in Australia and
New Zealand closing this weekend, the season Down Under
is finishing in fine style.
Treble Cone had 35cm
of new snow on top on Wednesday (see pic below).
Most
other resorts on the South Island also picked up 20-30cms
of snow, which kept coming down through to Thursday.
Temple Basin announced today
that they have extended their season for another week to
15 October to allow skiers and boarders to enjoy their 50cm
fall.
So despite a dodgy start
in NZ and a weak finish in Australia, this probably goes
down as a great winter Down Under. And this comes at the
same time that we discover the hole in the ozone layer is
bigger than ever above the area.
Despite climatic conspiracies,
could it be that more than global warming the seasons are
shifting. Up Top and Down Under over the last few years,
the start to the season has been weaker than the end. How
long until we ski regularly in November in NZ [later this
year?] and in May in Europe?
We would like to thank
all our friends in Australia and New Zealand for your feedback
this winter, particularly Colin
Slater and James
Gambrill for their brilliant Updates, the resorts of
Treble Cone, Cardrona,
Thredbo and Falls
Creek for their ever regular snow reports and Boaderzone
for their superb event coverage.
Thanks a lot guys and we look
forward to welcoming you Up Top this winter!
