Resort Profile: Westendorf

By adamrowden, 20 Jul '12 at 09:28

Westendorf is a picturesque ski village in Austria that is one of the most wonderful locations for a family ski holiday. This is mainly thanks to its gentle nursery slopes and its small quaint size.

Though the town is quiet in the evenings and is not a bustling après party zone, twice a year it is transformed as thousands of people arrive for the legendary Hahnenkamm Warm-Up Week and ‘Jump and Freeze’ night, where you can watch people skiing into a pool of freezing water in fancy dress. It was also voted Europe’s most beautiful village in 1998.

Westendorf is part of the Ski Welt, which is the largest ski linked area in Austria and has over 350 km of runs for all levels of skier from beginners to advanced. Westendorf itself is great for beginners and families and anyone else who is looking for a peaceful and quiet ski holiday.

There are plenty of wide pistes and nursery slopes, however, there is also a decent amount of off-piste available for the more experienced riders out there. There are plenty of snow cannons which means you are almost always guaranteed snow, and there is also a dedicated snowboard park with a half pipe, to please the riders.

In the wider Ski Welt, linked by bus, the greatest concentration of manufactured 'boarding terrain is on the Hohe Salve mountain above Söll where there's a fun park with three half pipes. Closer than Söll, only a 10 minute bus ride away, there's another fun park with an 80m half pipe above Brixen in Thale, which was first established for the '96 - '97 season. A fourth option is another Park above Scheffau.

The Ski Welt in general has a 'boarder friendly attitude as well as some useful terrain including natural gullies and fun features that develop in the woods at the edge of the trails. In the evenings Westendorf has the active nightlife that fits in with the off-snow model for most 'boarders' ideal winter holiday.
