The reigning champs of British slopestyle skiing, James Woods and Katie Summerhayes, showed their mettle in today’s freeski Animal Slopestyle Championships and retained their titles as British Champions.
Showing why she’s considered one of the best in the world for her age, 14-year-old Summerhayes (pictured right with Woodsy) smoothly straight lined the top three rails then went for a switch 540, 360 and 540 on the booters.
Following just three weeks after her second place finish at the European Freeskiing Open, it’s been a fantastic end to the season for Summerhayes, and she’s still got the Oakley Grom Games to come.
Sissy Herant threw down a huge 7 to start the final, but unfortunately didn’t make the landing. The attempt, and the rest of her run, was enough to earn her second, while Kelly O’Donnell took third.
The men’s final was a battle of the big guns but unfortunately missing one key player – James Webb landed on the knuckle on his neck after pulling a cork 9 and had to get to hospital sharpish. Fortunately, it’s not as serious as expected and he’s going to be ok.
Spending the season in Aspen seems to have paid off for James Machon, the previous day’s halfpipe winner. His style on the slope had improved since last year, and his confident run was enough to earn him third.
The atmosphere was epic as Paddy Graham took to the course – he pulled a double cork 1080 and the crowd went wild. His run looked good enough to take the title, but still to come was James ‘Woodsy’ Woods who, despite feeling a little nervous, stomped the kickers, going all out on the flairs and grabs. It was close to call, but later on the podium, Woodsy retained his title.
