Vail resorts launch hi-tech location application

31 August 2010 11:43

Beaver CreekVisitors to the Vail Resorts - which include Heavenly, Breckenridge and Keystone - will now benefit from a sophisticated application system that will allow them to track the ski areas and runs they have tackled during their stay.

Hi-tech system launches for 2010 season

Advanced technology in the form of radio-frequency scanners on all 89 lifts at Breckenridge, Beaver Creek, Keystone and Vail resorts in Colorado and at Heavenly in California will communicate with chips embedded on passes and tickets to automatically track guests' runs.

This technology will allow riders to keep track of their progress online or on the mobile EpicMix application, for free.

Skiers and snowboarders who opt in would have data shared automatically on their Facebook and Twitter updates, without them doing anything. And another great feature from EpicMix will also inform customers when their Facebook friends are skiing.

Vail Resorts CEO Rob Katz, an unashamed fan of tweeting, believes the EpicMix technology has the potential to be groundbreaking:

"This is taking the real experience of skiing and action sports and marrying it with social media in a way that doesn't require anybody to do anything new. People don't have to take out their phones from their pockets or wear a new gadget."
