Olympic ski jumping champion Matti Nykanen has been jailed for 16 months for attacking his wife on Christmas Day with a knife. The four time winner, who claimed three of his golds at the 1988 Calgary games, was jailed previously in 2004 for another assault.
Nykanen receives jail term Police were called to the house on Christmas Day, where Nykanen's wife Mervi was found with cuts and scratches on her head and body. The couple are now in the process of officially separating.
According to the Pirkanmaa Court where Nymanen was tried, "A knife was used in the assault and the crime is... considered aggravated".
Following a glittering career, Nykanen has had a series of run-ins with the law since his retirement. In 2004, the Finnish ski jumper received a 26 month jail sentence for aggravated assault following a stabbing at Nokia, based 180km north of Helsinki.
