Oh god, I've just gone against my own advice and requested one cheap from Hong Kong - absolutely no chance of returning that if it buggers up (and he gets it through customs). It's only to sit in the glovebox really though, so battery shouldn't be an issue.

How cheap?

I can hook my laptop up in my car sound system, which is handy cos my cd changer is fukced. I run it through the tape deck and get the power from a converter I got off ebay that plugs into the cigarette lighter.

I got an iriver because its 20gig, colour, displays photos & videos, has a built in radio (v good quality), records directly to mp3 through a line in, records off the radio, has a built in microphone, works with any computer so can be used as a portable hard drive (unlike ipod which only works with your computer), displays text files, has a high output line out to play it through speakers etc etc the list goes on.

about same price as an ipod but sh*ts all over it.

I've got the model before yours I think, the IHP-120... exactly the same but only has mono screen, so no photo's etc. I've had it coming up to 18mths now and never had a problem, still get 10hrs+ from the battery, no issues with the screen or any problems at all.

They're cheaper than an equivalent Ipod, and have tons more features, and better reliability/build quality.

The most important feature if your gonna be away though, is that you can use it on any PC, without having to use specialist software... Like SamC says, it shows up like a portable hard drive - so you can use it on any PC, and copy tunes as and when you like.

I'd definately go with an IRiver.

yeah I know what you mean I am slightly snobby about sound too, however, I am also very lazy. I might get round to it one day (probably not).

I literally made up my mind yesterday, that i should buy the ipod 20gb, to take on a 4 month to africa..... and now u lot have blown it!

I find it hard to make a decision at the best of times...... now i have a thousand new options and am not sure what to do!

I went onto the iriver site but it is so confusing i am once again lost, and now you talk of sony.

According to the Apple HK website the 60GB one comes in at £230 over there. Not masively cheap admittedly, but that 70quid saving is enough to buy one of these...

TM, I got mine in the UK for £250 legitimately.

Likewise, I was thinking of getting an iTrip to make it easier to hook up to the car. Any thoughts on that?

Sounds like a plan!

ok, so i have decided to buy an iriver.

wanted the 20gb H10, but can't find it in stock anywhere (or the other 20gb ones for some reason) and suspect that I might be perfectly ok with a 6gb H10.

Can find it for about £165. good value? the 5gb one is about £15 cheaper. Think it'll be ok to buy it from a website (e.g. dabs.com)? Its £180 on amazon/dixons i think.

discuss!

Have the same problem.... was also all geared up for a 20 gig ipod and then read this thread.
2 questions, first, can someone tell me about the new sony one NW-HE5 (?), and also, all my music is on itunes so can i move music from itunes to a sony (or any other non apple) mp3 player?
Help from anyone muchos appreciated - cheers

OK, so you could buy 6gb for £165, or you could get a 20GB iPod for the same money...

Try Ask Direct....

http://www.askdirect.co.uk/uview?call=ask.productBrowse&id=7&topcatid=21&make=iRiver

They've got a shop on Tottenham Court Road, and you can buy off the net. Looks like they've got stock, and they're £159.

I've used them a few times before, and if you can find a cheaper price on the net (in the uk) they will usually match it.
