JAMES GAMBRILL'S OZ UPDATE

31 May 2000

Here's my first Oz update of the season. Sorry it's short but everything has gone kind of crazy here with the snowfalls!!!

Yup, snowstorms hit the Australian Alps big time this weekend with over 1m of snow reported at the top of Thredbo and snow as low as Jindabyne, the gateway town to Thredbo and Perisher which usually only sees snow in August!

All the major Oz resorts have confirmed they are opening one week early on June 3, the first early opening for 10 years.

Thredbo is still gearing up for the big traditional opening weekend on June 9. In the past few years the resort has concentrated on promoting its 'non-skiing" activities as the chance of actually getting some runs in was fairly remote! This year the resort is hoping to be fully open for what may turn out to be some of the best skiing to be had all season. More snow forecast for next few days......
