JAMES GAMBRILL'S OZ UPDATE

27 June 2000

'Well I don't know how of you kept your fingers crossed for us down under but it was obviously enough as last weekend the Oz Alps received their second major dump of the season.

Now you have to remember that it is not at all unusual for it not to snow at all until July. In fact many lodges in Thredbo didn't open last year until July 1......

Conditions at the weekend were perfect with a 50 cm covering of fresh snow on a firm base. The only problem is that Thredbo Village is a little too low for the lower runs to get a good covering. As a result the last run of the day is always a descent through a combination of sheet ice and large piles of artificial snow.

Perisher has cleverly avoided this problem by building the village 300m higher than Thredbo. The not so clever part is that the top of the skiing is the same height so all the runs are only half as long....

Amazingly even more snow is predicted for this week so those of you who crossed their fingers last time keep them crossed...and tell your friends too.

James
