JAMES GAMBRILL'S OZ UPDATE

22 August 2000

My final weekend in Thredbo was preceded by another 75cm dump in this unbelievable season.

Just to keep up with NZ the Australian resorts saw 50cm fall in one night followed by 25cm throughout Wednesday. Reports of waist deep powder came flooding in on Thursday and a Canadian instructor based in Thredbo declared it was 'just like being back home....'

Following the early start to the season where most resorts opened one week early the buzz now is for an extension to the season which is due to finish on the weekend of 29 September. With the Sydney Olympics kicking off on September 15 most ski operators are predicting a very quiet end to September even with the current snow conditions so you can bet if they can keep selling trips longer they will. Whether the resorts will give out the free lift passes they did for the early opening remains to be seen....

Forecast for this week is for snow for Monday to......Thursday! Over a metre to come in the next few days....maybe I'll hang around a bit longer...

[Stop Press later on the 22nd - It looks like James called it right...another 10-20cms fell today]
