OZ UPDATE: FROM STEVE ANGUS

21 August 2001

The snow has been dumping down for almost a week now with reports of up to 1 metre of powder to ski in at Thredbo just now!

I skied Perisher Blue this weekend and despite there being 100 mph driving winds and blizzard conditions all over the place the weekend was great. There was plenty of tree lined skiing to keep me entertained and I was surprised how big Perisher is - it compares pretty favourably to many European resorts.

This weekend they are expecting there to be somewhere in the region of 20,000 Sydneysiders heading to Thredbo. This makes me laugh since the road for the most part is only a single lane cariageway therefore the queues will be amusing to put it mildly. Particularly given the Australian driving (they are not well versed at driving on wintery roads and there were several cars spinning off last weekend).

Heading off from Sydney at 4:45pm this Friday evening allowing for the sheer number of cars heading the same direction, I should make it into Thredbo for about 1am - just in time for a trip to the Keller Nightclub - down some Schnapps and off I go ready for a fantastic powder weekend.

Until next time,

Steve Angus
