OZ UPDATE: FROM LAYDELS |
15 June 2001 |
Well, 2001 winter in NSW has a big act to follow, after last year's epic season, which has been dubBed the 30 year storm with a recorded top of 262cm around August/September. In keeping with tradition, the Queen's Birthday long weekend has marked the official opening of our snow season, regardless of snow - or lack of it in this case. However, there was still much to do, and plenty of friendly faces to catch up with also. Thredbo held a buskers competition in the village on Friday and on Saturday night the big box of fireworks came out, and I mean BIG. (apparently there were done by the same guy who does the ones on the Sydney Harbour Bridge - but don't quote me on that!) [Oops! Ed.] Not so many fireworks but still plenty of pretty lights over the lake. The sleepy little town of Jindabyne was woken up rather quickly as it filled with all sorts of folks. Wide awake by Saturday night, the majority of Jindy squeezing into The Lake Jindabyne Hotel (LJ's) for a treat with top Auzzie Band "You Am I" playing free. Up until yesterday (Thursday) it's been pretty quiet all round, with the lack of snow equalling lack of work also. So the vert ramp in Jindabyne's been busy and a fair few crew have been heading out to the Memorial Skate Park in Berridale to bide their time. Oh Yeah! - we're all stoked that we've
had around 15cm in the last two days with conditions
putting a smile on all our faces, especially Thredbo
snowmakers, who are finally able to work with their
million dollar snowmaking system upgrade that's now
able to produce about 50% more man made snow. In the
last two days they've clocked well over 30hrs snowmaking,
in At this stage only The Kosciusko Express lift (used to be called the Crackenback Express) has been open for sightseeing, Thredbo is hoping to open up Friday Flats with "Easy Does It" lift operating, and they are aiming to have Cruiser running soon also. That's about it for the moment, there's some nice nasty looking clouds lingering around, we're all waitin' for the goods! it's only a matter of time now. |
