OZ UPDATE: FROM STEVE ANGUS

8 June 2001

In the run up to the start of the season this weekend, things have been quite manic around here as you can imagine.

The Party

The weekend is a long weekend in Australia since Monday is the 'Queens Birthday Holiday' and Australia will be rocking, but Thredbo in particular which opens this weekend has a whole number of events planned including a 'Carnivale' themed party on the Saturday night, schnapps races, 'Freeheel Festival' and plenty more.

Triple M radio - one of the main Australia stations - is hosting their Thredbo opening weekend broadcast straight from the famous 'Schuss Bar' in tonight (Friday) - the legendary home of some of the most happening nights throughout the ski season each year.

We're going to try to set up a Natives competition so that the person who emails us first having heard the broadcast can win a free t-shirt. [Don't forget you can listen on the Net]

The Snow

The snow - well where is it? Last year they had some of the best skiing of the whole year in June. This year the weather outside is cold and grey but snowless.

Keep it quiet, but it it looks as if the low pressure system engulfing the Snowy Mountains will tighten its grip even more and we think that Sunday night is the night when it's really going to start dumping!

Thredbo especially is well known for its full season skiing and more so this year as the resort has invested over $1 million in articifical snow-making equipment. Thredbo now has the most artificial snow-making facilities in the whole of the Southern Hemisphere. _and_ it's only a short journey from Sydney to the mountains - about 7 hours - so you can easily go away skiing for the weekend.

Until next time...

Until next time as you ponder happy smiley people on the other side of the world doing things that you could only wish you were doing at this moment in time - remember it is simply elementary physics, pendular motion (nothing more than that) !!!

I'll be back next week with some more gossip on opening weekend and with some photos. Watch our for more information on things such as the corporate games, Australian University Championships, the famous Nokia Top - Bottom challenge in August etc etc.

And before you start cursing the Aussies for having their moment of fun remember that their cricket team spent much of the summer sweating away in the confines of the Australian Institute of Sport on Thredbo. Thus if we are to get our payback we had better get our skates on at the Test!

Take care and best wishes to Natives all over,

Steve Angus
