Oz resorts opened officially this weekend although
the major ones have had their lifts running all week
with the unprecedented amount of snowfall for June.
Booked
solid...
Thredbo
was booked solid across the weekend and became even
busier on Sunday when day trippers from neighboring
Perisher Blue arrived following the promise
of cheaper lift tickets! The National Parks authority
actually closed the gates on Sunday afternoon to anyone
who couldn't prove they had pre booked accommodation
for Sunday night.
Pisteur
Problems...
Snow
conditions were fantastic over the weekend with top
to bottom skiing - almost unheard of for opening weekend.
By Monday the combination of lower temperatures and
a few thousand skiers had packed the slopes down to
an icy base - I counted at least 10 bloodwagons on
Monday morning, including one pisteur who slipped
and was run over by the bloodwagon he was carrying.
Like
a house on fire...
The
traditional opening weekend fire work display reached
new heights when the chimney of the Thredbo Alpine
Hotel went up in flames taking a couple of the
most luxurious suites with it. More importantly this
meant the evacuation of the Keller Bar, Thredbo's
answer to Dicks T - bar, with 500 people cooing over
the pretty fire.....not realizing they were about
to spend the night on the restaurant floor!
More
snow is needed pretty soon to keep the current base
form wearing away to nothing. Light flurries are predicted
for this weekend but fingers are crossed for another
weather system at the end of the month that could
bring more snow than the last.....keep your fingers
crossed for us.
Cheers,
James
