JAMES GAMBRILL'S OZ UPDATE

4 August 2000

Hi there,

Well I'm pleased to say that the huge snowfall I reported on last time did continue all through the week.

I arrived in Thredbo last Thursady night to find it dumping in the village for the first time. Friday the sun came out and stayed all weekend for what was described as "the best weekend in 23 years" according to my reliable sources...(a guy in Cooma ski hire who wouldn't have been born 23 years ago).

Conditions certainly were the best I've experienced here with decent off-piste for the first time and even light powder to be found in places!  Apparently Aussie powder is even rarer than Scottish powder so I feel very lucky to have experienced it.

This weekend sees the Australian University Alpine Championships (their equivalent to BUSC) kick of in Victoria's Mt Hotham.  Whilst not on quite the same scale as BUSC with about 500 students attending, it still promises to be quite an event, even if the organising committee are promoting 'a responsible attitude to alcohol consumption' (can you imagine a BUSC committee saying that??)

I see that NZ has finally got some snow too, better late than never guys........

James
