australian winters
Although Australia's highest point (Mount Kosciusko) is only 2200m, NSW and Victoria offer some great skiing in several resorts. Our Oz Update brings you...'up to date'.
Ski Areas
Thredbo in NSW is probably the most well known resort. Together with Perisher it has some of the best skiing in Australia with some pretty challenging runs and at just 280 miles from Sydney, it's a popular short break destination for Sydneysiders. Thredbo also boasts the largest snow making system in the southern hemisphere.
As in most of Australian life, there is considerable debate over which state can offer the best skiing. In Victoria, Mount Buller has 18 lifts, making it the largest lift system. Falls Creek and Mount Hotham are also good areas and have a nearby airport only 21 mins from Melbourne. For the adventurous, there is a six minute helicopter link between the two. If you want to stay on the ground, Falls Creek is now offering skiing by snowcat.
Not everyone reckons it's worth it. Barry Lang says WA is more worthwhile!
When to Go
Most resorts open up in June/July, with the best skiing in July, August and early-September.
