COLIN SLATER'S NZ UPDATE

23 June 2000

Whakapapa and Turoa opened today - Torvill and Dean apparently were there due to the quality of ice on the upper mountain.

Down on the South Island there's still no new snow so things have damped down a bit and firmed up as it were. It has been cold though, so snowmaking where applicable has been running. It's still looking good but we could do with some more snow. Hopefully it'll come this weekend, when several more fields come online.Day One at Cardrona

Porter Heights, Rainbow and the Remarkables open this weekend. Cardrona opened today with a crowd of several hundred undeterred by poor weather. The resort opened up a day earlier than scheduled, mainly due to the 'best snow cover for ten years' (that's the official line).

Rumours - Whakapapa are going to buy Turoa ? Did someone just say monopoly ? They have claimed that they won't push prices up etc. as there's no competition (apart from Tukino :-} )

Anyway that's that, short and sweet until the next time.
