NZ UPDATE - CHRIS LOFTUS

25 June 2001

We needed more snow to keep the season on track Down Under and we got it - just.

After a couple of days of very poor snow conditions some fresh falls and a drop in temperature have resulted in a very welcome freshening up of the well worn trails up on Coronet Peak.

The new snow has also meant that Cardrona and The Remarkables opened on Saturday after a great deal of "shall we, shan't we" from the resort management teams. I've not been up to Cardrona yet but I did have the "pleasure" of opening day up at The Remarks. In short the drive up is long and rather painful to say the least, the snow was great but until all the trails open up the runs are simply too short to keep you interested for more than a couple of hours. Hiking up the back walls to get some freshies is a fun way to use up a bit of time. The beginners dislike the amount of walking/scooting they have to do on the green/blue trails.

So it's back to Coronet Peak for me until we have some serious dumps.

For those who are interested there is still no accommodation in Queenstown, a situation that has been reported on NZ national TV. Jobs are just as hard to come by - 24 telephone applications for a cleaning job last week! The word is that people with jobs but no accom and those without either are going to start heading out of town if things don't improve. The local paper has reported a sharp increase in the number of people letting out their garages illegally!

It's a real shame considering the amount of people who nabbed cheap season passes back in March and headed over here planning to stay the whole winter.
